  • Space Night

Position: Declare the winter solstice “Space Night.”
Description: On the winter solstice, California will shut down all non-essential public lighting for one hour at 0000. This temporary reduction in light pollution gives every Californian the chance to see a natrual night sky and reconnect with the scale of our existence.
Space Night also serves as a statewide educational moment—encouraging schools, science centers, and observatories to host voluntary astronomy and STEM events that deepen curiosity, scientific literacy, and generational perspective. This simple tradition grounds us, inspires young minds, and reminds all Californians that we are part of something far larger than ourselves.
